Our Wines

It All Begins In The Vines

You’ve heard it before, “Great wines start in the vineyard.”

At Casanel Vineyards & Winery, our main focus centers on our passion for quality grape-growing. Our unique terroir, located in the heart of the Middleburg AVA in Leesburg, Virginia, provides us with the perfect setting to achieve our exclusive winemaking style and flavors.

Our tranquil setting amidst the Catoctin Ridge offers just the right combination of macro- and micro-climates to help us attain optimal protection and control in our vineyards. Our soils are comprised of shale, clay, loam, greenstone, and quartz, providing the perfect conditions for our seven distinctive varieties which are planted on two estate vineyards on our family’s homestead. Our motivation is clear: to grow and create truly expressive, truly Virginian wines.

With help from world-renowned viticulturist Lucie Morton, our team develops exclusive vineyard management protocol which incorporates as many organic and biodynamic practices as possible, as well as tried and true methods used by modern vineyard teams around the world. Each grape is nurtured on the vine, artfully crafted in our cellar, and then finely hand-bottled and hand-labeled before our wine makes its way into your glass. Our team is here working for you, from bud to bottle.

People, passion, and a sense of place make our wines a perfect pour, every time.

Our Winemaking Philosophy

Our winemaking philosophy relies on a combination of both technical precision and non-interventionist techniques to craft high-quality Virginia wines. Our team focuses the greatest efforts to maintain thoughtful vineyard management, which comes in handy in the cellar, as we produce our wines in small lots and batches.

Balance, elegance, and restraint are our guiding principles in the cellar. Here at Casanel, we hope to showcase what our grapes can do in the bottle, highlighting their unique personalities in each wine. Our promise is backed by integrity and transparency in everything that we do, the most important of which is to use and produce solely Virginia grown and made wines.

Great wines start in the vineyard, and our team is dedicated to using the best, most forward-thinking tactics to not only ensure the sustainability of our vineyards, but to also combat the everyday challenges we face growing grapes in Virginia. Of course, being on the East Coast, our team wages an uphill battle with constant pressure derived mostly from our consistently inconsistent weather. We use a mix of both traditional and modern methods in our cellar, as well as rely on extremely strict sanitation protocol and clean winemaking practices.

From bud-to-bottle, our team strives to be one step ahead. From hand-pruning and hand-harvesting in the vines, to hand-bottling and hand-labeling in the cellar, our wines embody the passion and perseverance of the people who care most about our product.
